Message from the Program Director:

sandeep krishnan

Thank you for your interest in the Anesthesiology Residency Program at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. I would like to share a few thoughts about our program and the Metro Detroit area in general.

It is truly a privilege to hold the position of Program Director for the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Anesthesiology. The program was created in 2014, and offers a three-year advanced residency, approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  We have six resident positions in each of the CA-1 to CA-3 categorical years. We are a community-based residency program, which offers experience and training across the spectrum of anesthesiology specialties, including cardiac, thoracic, vascular, obstetrics, critical care, pain management and pediatrics.

The core of this educational experience is centered on the diverse community population we serve. Our residents gain exposure to a wide variety of patients, often with significant co-morbidities, undergoing a diverse range of procedures. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac Michigan serves as the heart of our training program; however, our residents will also rotate at Children's Hospital of Michigan, and the Straith Interventional Pain Clinic. Each training site has unique mission, culture, work flow, and procedure variety.

We believe that academic preparation is equally as important as clinical experience during residency training. Our residency program is committed to ensuring that we maximize the academic potential of all of our trainees by offering daily keyword reviews; regular problem based learning discussions, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and grand rounds, in addition to scheduled didactic sessions. Residents are provided with a leading text book, subscription to True Learn, Access Anesthesiology, and Pass Machine, an online tool for board examination preparation. Residents are also assigned a faculty mentor to ensure that they receive the individualized attention that they need to achieve success and pass the American Board of Anesthesiology Staged Exams.

Residents in our program are expected to demonstrate commitment to scholarly activity that advances our specialty into the future.  We offer the opportunity to participate in research projects, quality improvement projects, and scholarly works. Our Department is committed to maintaining an academically focused environment inclusive of all members, and we emphasize the participation of our trainees in all aspects of our scholarly efforts. For those residents specifically interested in pursuing research as an essential component of their future career, we have developed a resident research pathway, which allows the resident the opportunity for a 6-month research rotation during their CA-3 year working with our research staff on a project of their own design.

As far as location goes, Metro Detroit is comprised of a group of up-and-coming neighborhoods that has changed in a significantly positive manner over the last decade. The area is home to art museums, a rich music scene, nationally recognized pro and college sports teams, great food, and a vibrant culture of urban revival. The "Great Lakes" State is also home to some of the most beautiful lakes, nature preserves, parks and golf courses in the country. As a native Metro Detroiter, I can honestly say that this is an amazing place to live, work, and train!

Thank you for taking the time to look at our program. We have quite a bit to offer to the student contemplating a career in anesthesiology, and are committed to training the next generation of leaders in our specialty. I look forward to meeting you in person (or by a virtual interview) and sharing with you the unique strengths of our program.

Dr. Sandeep Krishnan served as Associate Program Director for two years before stepping into the role of Program Director in July of 2016.
