Chairman's Message

On behalf of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, I am pleased that you have an interest in our academic department, education, research, and clinical practice.

The Department of Anesthesiology is focused upon providing a highly diverse patient population with premier quality clinical care in a community-based setting, offering our patients access to cutting edge treatment modalities and technology no matter their socioeconomic status. Our department is headquartered in Pontiac Michigan, and we offer a comprehensive range of perioperative services to patients undergoing a wide range of procedures in both the hospital and ambulatory care settings, in addition to Intensive Care Medicine, Acute, and Chronic Pain Management. We provide care utilizing a novel and successful team-based approach that sees all of our providers working together as a fully integrated team under departmental leadership in effort to accomplish a common mission.

We are distinguished by our commitment to providing our students and trainees with outstanding clinical training experience, comprehensive didactic instruction, and highly varied scholarly opportunities in a modern environment of mutual respect and collegiality. Department faculty take great pride in the success of our students and residents, placing strong emphasis in involvement of learners in all aspects of our clinical and academic endeavors.

Anesthesia education within our department encompasses undergraduate education at Wayne State University School of Medicine as well as our sole-sponsored, three-year, ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited Advanced Anesthesiology Residency Program that was founded in 2014. ACGME approved fellowships in Pain Medicine, Pediatric Anesthesiology, and Critical Care Medicine are available locally through our affiliated training programs. We also actively participate in the education of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists through both the Wayne State University and Detroit Mercy Nurse Anesthesia training programs, and a number of our CRNA staff have faculty appointments with these programs. The Department of Anesthesiology actively seeks inquisitive individuals interested in learning, leading, and lending their skills and intellect to the endeavor of advancing our specialty into the future and improving the quality and safety of the care we provide.

Southeastern Michigan is a beautiful region bordered by Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, and the Detroit River. It is comprised of more than a dozen cities and is home to almost 7.5 million people, making it the tenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The region is rich in diversity, has a thriving art and music scene, is home to collegiate and professional teams from every major sport, hosts a flourishing number of great dining choices, farmers markets, entertainment venues, and the vibrancy of urban renewal that is taking place. It truly is a beautiful place that has something for everyone.
